Rob Perez, Honolulu Star-Advertiser investigative reporter, authored a series of articles on the challenges facing Hawaii Department of Human Services in its efforts to protect children from child abuse and neglect.

Lynne Youmans was interviewed for the article highlighting the recent Hawaii Supreme Court decision that provides guidance on how to make adoption decisions for children who have been permanently removed from their birth parents. Specifically, the Supreme Court made clear that non-kin placements must be considered along with relative placements in making a decision about what is best for a child.

Youmans’ quote:

Attorney Lynne Youmans applauded the state Supreme Court’s decision, saying it would have a major impact on the lives of some of Hawaii’s most vulnerable children.

“Many children will find loving, supportive permanent family homes with biological relatives,” she said. “Other children will find loving, supportive permanent family homes with nonrelatives who have become family to those children. All possibilities must be considered.”
